Feminist Theory
Woman's rights alludes to political, social, and financial developments planned for building up more noteworthy rights, lawful assurance for ladies, or potentially ladies' freedom. It incorporates a portion of the sociological hypotheses and ways of thinking worried about issues of sexual orientation contrast. Nancy Cott characterizes woman's rights as the confidence in the significance of sexual orientation uniformity, refuting the possibility of sex order as a socially built idea. Women's liberation has earned itself a terrible notoriety, however it never subverted sexual orientation contrasts that exist among guys and females. A man can never be as acceptable a mother as a female can.Similarly, a lady can never be as acceptable a dad as a male can. While tolerating these anatomical and physiological contrasts between the two sexual orientations, woman's rights looks for the two sexes to be similarly regarded. They are both human and as an animal categories, people can't advance wi thout both of them. Maggie Humm and Rebecca Walker separate the historical backdrop of woman's rights into three waves. The main wave unfolded in the nineteenth and mid twentieth centuryââ¬â¢s, the second happened during the 1960s and 1970s, and the third reaches out from the 1990s to the present. In each flood of the development, however men have partaken in noteworthy reactions to woman's rights, the connection among men and women's liberation has been perplexing. Verifiably, various men have drawn in with women's liberation. Rationalist Jeremy Bentham requested equivalent rights for ladies in the eighteenth century. In 1866, scholar John Stuart Mill introduced a ladies' request to the British Parliament and bolstered a revision to the 1867 Reform Bill.An expansion of women's liberation into hypothetical or philosophical fields, for example, human sciences, social science, financial matters, ladies' examinations, abstract analysis, workmanship history, and therapy is called wome n's activist hypothesis. Women's activist hypothesis intends to comprehend sex imbalance and spotlights on sex governmental issues, power relations, and sexuality. While giving a scrutinize of these social and political relations, a lot of women's activist hypothesis centers around the advancement of ladies' privileges and interests. Topics investigated in women's activist hypothesis incorporate separation, generalizing, externalization (particularly sexual generalization), abuse, and patriarchy.Today, women's activist hypothesis has showed in an assortment of controls, for example, women's activist topography, women's activist history, women's activist religious philosophy, and women's activist abstract analysis and has changed conventional points of view on a wide scope of zones in human life, from culture to law. Women's activist activists have crusaded for ladies' legitimate rights, for example, privileges of agreement, property rights, and casting a ballot rights while addition ally elevating ladies' privileges to real respectability and self-governance, fetus removal rights, and conceptive rights. They have attempted to shield ladies and young ladies from abusive behavior at home, lewd behavior, and assault. On financial issues, women's activists have supported for work environment rights, including maternity leave and equivalent compensation, and against different types of sex explicit victimization ladies. During a lot of its history, women's activist developments and hypotheses were driven dominatingly by working class white ladies from Western Europe and North America. Be that as it may, in any event since Sojourner Truth's 1851 discourse to American women's activists, ladies of different races have proposed elective feminisms. This pattern quickened during the 1960s with the social liberties development in the United States and the breakdown of European imperialism in Africa, the Caribbean, portions of Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Since that time , ladies in previous European states and the Third World have proposed postcolonial and Third World feminisms. Postcolonial women's activists contend that mistreatment identifying with the pioneer understanding, especially racial, class, and ethnic abuse, has minimized ladies in postcolonial societies. They challenge the suspicion that sex persecution is the essential power of male controlled society. They item to depictions of ladies of non-Western social orders as aloof and voiceless casualties and the depiction of Western ladies as present day, instructed, and engaged. Today, they battle to battle sexual orientation abuse inside their own social models of society as opposed to through those forced by the Western colonizers. They, hence, respond against both universalizing propensities in Western women's activist idea and an absence of consideration regarding sexual orientation issues in standard postcolonial thought. Some postcolonial women's activists, for example, Chandra Talpade Mohanty and Black women's activists, for example, Angela Davis and Alice Walker, are incredulous of Western women's liberation for being ethnocentric. Chandra Talpade Mohanty reprimands Western women's liberation on the ground that it doesn't consider the one of a kind encounters of ladies from underdeveloped nations or the presence of feminisms indigenous to underdeveloped nations. This talk is unequivocally identified with African women's liberation and is additionally connected with ideas, for example, dark women's liberation, womanism, Africana womanism, motherism, Stiwanism, negofeminism, chicana woman's rights, and femalism.Pro-women's liberation is the help of women's liberation without suggesting that the supporter is an individual from the women's activist development. The term is frequently utilized concerning men who are effectively strong of women's liberation and of their endeavors to achieve sexual orientation equity. The exercises of professional women's activist men 's gatherings incorporate enemy of viciousness work with young men and youngsters in schools, offering inappropriate behavior workshops in working environments, running network instruction crusades, and guiding male culprits of violence.Pro-women's activist men additionally are associated with men's wellbeing, activism against sex entertainment including hostile to sex entertainment enactment, men's examinations, and the improvement of sex value educational plans in schools. This work is once in a while as a team with women's activists and ladies' administrations, for example, aggressive behavior at home and assault emergency focuses. A few activists of the two sexes allude to all star women's activist men as ââ¬Ëpro-women's activists' and not as ââ¬Ëfeminists'. There have been certain and negative responses and reactions to woman's rights, contingent upon the individual man and the social setting of the time. These reactions have shifted from expert woman's rights to masculism to against women's liberation. In the twenty-first century, new responses to women's activist philosophies have risen, including an age of male researchers associated with sex studies and men's privileges activists who advance male uniformity remembering equivalent treatment for family, separation, and antiâ discrimination law. Today, scholastics like Michael Flood, Michael Messner, and Michael Kimmel are engaged with men's investigations and genius feminism. The United Nations Human Development Report 2004 evaluated that, when both paid business and unpaid family unit undertakings are represented, on normal ladies work more than men. In country territories of chose creating nations ladies played out a normal of 20 percent more work than men, or an extra 102 minutes out of every day. In the OECD nations studied, on normal ladies performed 5 percent more work than men, or 20 minutes out of each day. On 3 September 1981. The UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimin ation Against Women (CEDAW), portrayed as a global bill of rights for ladies, came into force. While Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Qatar, Nauru, Palau, and Tonga have not endorsed CEDAW, a few nations have confirmed the Convention subject to specific assertions, reservations, and complaints. Various women's activist journalists keep up that recognizing as a women's activist is the most grounded stand men can take in the battle against sexism. They have contended that men ought to be permitted, or even be energized, to take an interest in the women's activist development. Other female women's activists counter-contend that men can't be women's activists basically in light of the fact that they are not women. They keep up that men are conceded intrinsic benefits that keep them from relating to women's activist battles, in this manner making it unthinkable for them to relate to women's activists. Independent of what the women's activist scholars keep up, the women's activist development has affe cted change in Western culture, including ladies' testimonial, more noteworthy access to instruction, all the more almost fair compensation with men, the option to start separate from procedures and ââ¬Ëno shortcoming' separate, and the privilege of ladies to settle on singular choices in regards to pregnancy (counting access to contraceptives and premature birth), just as the option to possess property.

Blog Archive You Dont Need a 750 to Get In!
Blog Archive You Donât Need a 750 to Get In! Recently, we have had a variety of MBA applicants ask some form of the following question: âDo I need a 750 to get into a top MBA program?â Although a 750 on the GMAT can only help, it is definitely not a prerequisite. We wanted to dispel this myth and put some who believe it at ease. Here are a few simple reasons why this is just not the case⦠1. The Average Is Lower: Average GMAT scores at the top 15 MBA programs range from approximately 700 to 730. Clearly, if the high end of the GMAT average range is 730, the schools cannot expect applicants to have a 750. That would mean that every applicant would be above average, and that just is not possible. Still, if a candidateâs score falls below the average, this generally places a greater burden on the other components of the individualâs applicationâ"so, for example, maybe his/her work experience would need to be stronger than othersâ, or maybe his/her extracurriculars would need to stand out even more. Or maybe I am straying from my main point! The bottom line is that mathematically speaking, many people have a GMAT score below 750. 2. Dee Leopold Says So: I recently spoke with Dee Leopold, the managing director of MBA admissions and financial aid at Harvard Business School, who told me point blank that she assesses each individual differently and neither expects nor demands a target GMAT score. The school just happens to have a high number of great applicants with high scores to choose from, and thus its average remains high. Dee said that she would closely examine a journalistâs Quant score and pay particular attention to an engineerâs Verbal score, for example. She is concerned that people obsess over target GMAT scores and specifically said that she will not provide candidates with GRE guidance because she does not want to trigger similar anxieties with regard to that exam as well. She grudgingly acknowledged that no matter how many public declarations she makes to the contrary, applicants simply refuse to believe that she does not have a targetâ"and then insisted again that she does not! 3. Too Few Applicants Have a 750 or Higher: The top 15 MBA programs accept approximately 7,000 applicants each application season. Only approximately 3,700â"4,600 GMAT test takers earn scores of 750 or higher each year (depending on whether GMAC counts test taken or individual test takers), and some are earned by people who do not ultimately apply to business school at all, do not apply to any of the leading schools, take the test only to become an GMAT instructors, pursue an EMBA or part-time MBA instead, are rejected because other aspects of their profile render them uncompetitive and the list goes on. Basically, the top 15 MBA programs do not receive applications from enough applicants with 750s to entirely populate their incoming class, as evidenced by the schoolsâ mid-80% GMAT ranges, which are typically 660â"760. 4. All Schools Take the GRE!: Applicants do not really even need to take the GMAT anymore. Of course, if you do take the GMAT, you should strive to achieve the highest score possible, but if the GMAT is not even required, you obviously would not need to score a 750 to be accepted. (Note: London Business School is the sole âGMAT onlyâ holdout among top-programs; the GMAT is âpreferredâ at Dartmouth-Tuck and UCLA-Anderson, but the GRE is still accepted). We want to be unequivocal: 750 is a great GMAT score, and anyone with one should be delighted. However, if you do not fare as well on the exam, you should still be quite hopeful and keep a positive mind-set because the admissions process is holistic. The Human Rights Of Water And Investment Law - 962 Words
Given these difficulties, it is understandable why previous tribunals in have been reluctant to analyse the relationship between the human rights to water and investment law as a normative conflict, and have instead insisted that the obligations under each norm were not mutually exclusive. However, it is possible for a human rights norm to prevail, as shown by the tribunals in SPP and Chemtura. The respondent government in water grab case should argue BITs should not be interpreted so that a government is made to ignore its human rights obligations once it has entered into a concession with a foreign investor, and as there is no alternative but to reallocate water rights following a water grab, the investment protection norm and right to water are contradictory, and one must prevail. 4.2.2 Interpretation tool Professor Vià ±uales classifies the second approach of tribunals applying human rights law as ââ¬Ëa tool of interpretation.ââ¬â¢ Another way a respondent can argue for the consideration of a human rights norm would be by interpreting investment norms in a way that excludes from the scope of their breach measures aimed at upholding human rights. Article 31(3)(c) of the Vienna Convention on the Law of the Treaties holds that tribunals must interpret treaty obligations in light of relevant rules of international law applicable in the relations between the parties. Time- Saving Technologies free essay sample
TimeThe more timesaving inventions we own, the less time we have In my essay I tried to focus on the problems of utilization of leisure time. There is no doubt that our world is constantly changing. Nowadays, modern technologies take up very important place in our lives. ââ¬Å"The last couple of decades have witnessed a formidable growth of various time-saving technologies, ranging from advanced multi-level time managers to e-mail, voicemail, mobile telephones and word processors; and yet millions of us have never had so little time to spare as now. It may seem as if we are unwittingly being enslaved by the very technology that promised liberation. Changes which ostensibly boost efficiency and creativity may in fact do the exact opposite. â⬠(Eriksen, Thomas Hylland. Tyranny of the moment. London: Pluto Press, 2001) Despite the fact that we have thanks to modern technologies access to a large array of information, that all of the generations before us could certainly envied us, still we are not wiser, but more confused. It does not mean that the more we know, the more we understand the world and the things around us. We have only more options than the previous generations. The aim of this work is not to find the arguments, why take a stand against progress and information society, but it is also important to understand its unintended consequences. 2. History Nowadays, there are many writings, referring to this issue. Thus, to what extent perfect instruments we have, and how much less we manifest our own effort in searching of new information, we will cease to develop our own ideas, and we become the only beings consuming foreign opinion. As Eriksen claims, in our society, everything is running at high speed, but only a few things are actually moving forward. A lot of new things wait for us every day and we have to deal with them. The company is becoming more consumerist; because it just takes the information published anywhere. Thanks to the commonness and the system of modern technologies, only a few people consider about their actual content. In order to move on, we have to recall the basic historical context. As I have described above, the problem of our society is particularly its general acceleration. As remind Eriksen, this is connected with the invention of the telegraph and the steam engine. As well as these inventions affect the life of the inhabitants at the time of its expansion, resources to help you work affect life in the present time. People, who work in the field of information technologies and are directly affected by this progress, live in constant haste and with a sense that their working hours are overcrowded and the time scrappy. The pace is so high that, in many cases, it affects family life. Another example is the invention of the typewriter, whose original meaning was only facilitating the writing strongly visually impaired people. Yet his discovery increases the number of texts, which publishing became simpler. Once again, however, this is a type of progress, which leads society to a further and even greater acceleration. To get nearer in the past, we discover the age of computers. For a few years has spread to nearly every office, some people even had the opportunity to have it at home. Ten years later, it was also a rapid expansion of the internet. In the last twenty years, the Czech Republic has been also changed in almost all areas. Also interest in modern technologies grew up. In the last two decades, the internet became one of the most widely used means of communication between humans. ââ¬Å"Between 2005- 2009, in the Czech Republic almost doubled the number of its users (32% in 2005 and 60% in 2009). The number of users increased throughout the European Union (65% in 2009). Email has been in the last 5 years the most popular form of communication on the internet. In 2005, through her to interact with 84% of users, with a growing number of Internet users has been growing the number of email users (in 2009 it is send 91% of Internet users, 88% of the EU total). The United States, Canada and the Scandinavian countries rank among the countries with the highest proportion of users. And the availability of information from any place of the globe is one of the cognitive characters of the information society. â⬠(Eurostat, Community survey on ICT usage in households and by individuals, 2010) 3. The power of information technologies Information technologies and technologies are very important in all types of production. Lets imagine. One day, we would be separated from all the inventions of the last few decades. Lets have a think about what would happen if all the computers in the world stopped working. It would be a huge problem in hospitals, airports, we ourselves could feel it extensively in daily life. The fact that we are totally dependent on modern technologies is indisputable. When we talk about the information society, it should be mentioned how this society affects in many ways so many people who are in it. In the introduction I have already mentioned that in our surrounding is a vast amount of information with which we must cope every day. We are not suffering from ââ¬Å"hunger for informationâ⬠, rather the contrary. We have so much of information, and what is the most difficult, the ability to choose the ones that are really important. How easily distinguish the information relevant from the irrelevant, the useful from the useless. 4. Fast- moving times Despite the fact that day of each of us has 24 hours, only a few of us use his free time truly effectively. Here we can see the side effects of modern technologies. As Eriksen says, the generation of our parents grew up with a few television programs, but the television today is thanks to the diversity of channels completely different. Not really at the end of the last century no one could have argued that the most active users of mobile phones will be in a few yearsââ¬â¢ young people. We have unlimited possibilities, so many ways how to be informed. The problem remains that the information published on the Internet make extremely dense and unclear networkââ¬Å", which is constantly growing. The unintended consequence of this system is the fact that the more diverse articles about everything are available to us, the less we understand the true nature of each problem. As Eriksen proclaims, if there were fewer articles, we had more time for each and we could become real experts on the issue. It is possible to think quickly, but some of the ideas may arise only when you are ruminating with slowness. Slow time is not the same as a lot of the time. Read and understand moderately long poem will not take more than a couple of minutes, but you need to do it slowly. It is a problem of todays hurried time. We are coming back to the introductory sentence of this paragraph, which draws attention to the possibilities of utilization of time. How we can ideally spread that 24 hours. As evidence the scientific researches, most of us use only a fraction of their time effectively. That divides people into successful and unsuccessful. The better use of our time means that we are more productive and our work is more efficient. 5. Work efficiency ââ¬Å¾Effectivenessà is the capability of producing a desired result. When something is deemed effective, it means it has an intended or expected outcome, or produces a deep, vivid impression. ââ¬Å" http://en. wikipedia. org It is time for the question. Does life in the information society with highly developed technologies truly brings the work efficiency. In my opinion, modern technologies are extremely important, and in many aspects make work easier, but sometimes ironically lead to the phenomenon when the technology of efficiency is against his original intention. For clarification, the invention of the mobile phone saves us undoubtedly a lot of time. In other words, it ensures flexibility and control. Unfortunately, and it reminds Eriksen, this type of flexibility, which raises the expectation that everybody can be reached anytime and anywhere. As Eriksen says, as long as is a few callers, the technique works as a great helper, saving time and labor. But in time when the number of callers exceeds a fixed threshold, the result is opposite. Conclusion ââ¬Å"It has been computed by some political arithmetician that if every man and woman would work for four hours each day on something useful, that labour would produce sufficient to procure all the necessaries and comforts of life â⬠¦ and the rest of the 24 hours might be leisure and happiness. â⬠http://blogs. reuters. com Benjamin Franklin dreamed about technological progress in 18th century, he believed in humanity progress, but he was mistaken. Despite the fact that the human race makes great headway in technologies, we work more and more and we have less free time. Our imagination of real values, real liberty, is mainly connected with money and success. Thomas N. Carver asks the question: ââ¬Å"Is it better to give priority to increasing prosperity, or leisure time? â⬠In my opinion, many people share belief that the first variant is better. Many people prefer make money at the expanse of their free time. And if they decided to spend their leisure time, they often only watch television to the exclusion of improves own personality. Nowadays, we have access to a large array of information, but we have because of ubiquitous technologies problems to find enough time to deal with them. There are again the unintended consequences of modern technologies. Computer may save our time, work; but very important condition for success is the continuous concentration on things we want. Refuse to be distracted by the technologies and things around us. To sum it up, the timesaving inventions facilitate our work, but it is often to the exclusion of our time. a starry night essays
a starry night essays Starry Night Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night is a marvelous painting in which Van Gogh paints a picture that is colorful and descriptive. This painting can be described as mysterious and intriguing. It can signify a variety of moods, objects, and atmosphere. Van Gogh portrays a small French town located in the countryside. This town is characterized by rolling mountains, big starry sky, small houses, green fields, a large tree, and a church. He uses these details to paint a story full of color and intrigue. Van Gogh uses oil to paint this work on a 72cm x 92cm canvas board. Oil provides a semi-blurred texture. He uses different colors like blue, black, orange, yellow, purple, green, and violet. He paints the sky purple and dark blue to signify the evening. He uses orange and yellow for the bright stars in the sky. The mountains that border the town are colored a dark blue and are masked by a tree, which is colored black. Green is applied for the grass and other various plants and veg etation. He uses a vast array of colors to paint the houses and buildings in the village. In the Starry Night mood and description play a major part. The evening sky is exposed with vibrant flames of light streaming through the sky. One person might think that huge comets are hurtling toward the earth, signaling the end of the world, while another could guess that Van Gogh was painting a scene where large stars and the navy blue sky are brightening the medieval type landscape. He creates a painting that shows the beauty of the countryside. Looking up at the sky the bright, yellowish-white stars twirl about as if the wind currents direct them. The wind itself is blowing fast and swift, directed by the easterly currents from the ocean. Right below the sky lie the rolling mountains that overlook the village. Their presence brings peace and quiet to the French village. The mountains provide shade and protection from afar. Van Gogh also includes a large cypress ...

Paul Garrett - Essay Example and the economic devastation caused by the world wars set the industrial giants thinking and they felt the necessity to prove to the consumers that their existence is no threat to democracy and the American dreams. ââ¬Å"In 1923, General Motors, although eager to have its employees ââ¬Ëlook upon our organization as a human rather than a corporate institution,ââ¬â¢ had to recognize that it is one of the limitations of a large organization that the men charged with guiding its destiny cannot maintain a direct personal contact with all of its employees.â⬠(Marchand, p.8) Industrial magnets began to ponder as to how to rejuvenate the plights of their soulless corporations. The top ones strongly felt that something was lacking somewhere. There was no bridge between the top management and the employees on the one hand and the consumers on the other, and if there was one, it had big gaps and lacked continuity. ââ¬Å"Reports of an apparent dwindling of employee morale, sometimes voiced by corporate leaders themselves, revealed lack of individual vitality within these large-scale operations, an absence of a recognized, animating people.â⬠(Marchand, p.8) ââ¬Å"PAUL GARRETT in 1931 became the first person to direct public relations at General Motors. Personal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 8
Personal - Essay Example They are generally talkative and the best way for them to understand a concept is by talking about it (Bixler, 2010). The Kinesthetic learner, on the other hand, learns best by going through an activity. They prefer carrying out the activity in a practical way rather than listening to a teacher giving a lecture or carrying out a demo. As a student, it is important that one understands his or her learning style as it will help them adopt study habits that are in line with their learning style. This will not only make the learning process easy but will also go a long way in ensuring that the student performs better in his or her studies (The Center for New Discoveries in Learning, 2012). Being a public relations student, the major reason for seeking a college education is to ensure that I can obtain the required knowledge for public speaking and handling clients because my job will entail a lot of that. Therefore, as the study indicates that I am an auditory learner, I totally agree with it because I best learn by hearing and speaking. As I listen to the lecture, I form a mental picture of what is being said, and as I read, I internalize the whole concept that is being taught. This is important because as a student I should be able to picture the whole concept of what is going on (Bixler, 2010). In the public relation sector, listening and talking is key, therefore, while developing this skill, I am laying a good foundation for my future career. As a public relations officer I should be able to listen carefully and get the whole concept of what is being discussed. Furthermore, I should be an eloquent speaker who can relate well to the clients, understand the whole c oncept and relay the necessary solutions. It can be concluded that many people use or prefer varied learning styles that come with various techniques. While many may have learning styles that can be said to be

Education Key to Success Essay Example for Free
Education Key to Success Essay In the 21st century technology should replace traditional teaching methods in order to stimulate student engagement. As social networking becomes more and more famous and teachers have to compete with something they Just dont have the right tools to fight them with the fight is Just unfair. With all the modern technology that todays students are surrounded with their attention spans have drastically decreased and with entertainment at the touch of a button away from them it becomes very hard to keep a class of 30 students entertained for an hour and as time passes by this will gradually get more and more orse. I am personally a very geeky technical person to me computers are like real life people who talk to you and guide you as long as you ask them right questions. I have started depending so much on computers that whenever I need help rather than asking my teacher I look it up on google because it is so much faster and easier to do but that information is not always true. I think the solution to this problem isnt to completely get rid of todays teaching methods or not allow students to use their technological devices at all I think the solution is a medium between these two paths o that the teachers have an easier time teaching and students find it more enjoyable to learn education materials. I think todays use of power points in lectures makes it so much more easier for teachers to make their lesson plans and for students to access them later on whenever they need it. But for a couple of years that is where its been stuck it power points get more and more fancier but they arent necessarily helping the students engage into the material that they are learning in class. I think school district should have a set amount of money put aside for labs and competitions where students can ruly discover their talents. I think science classes in high schools are kind of pointless where students never actually get to experience how it truly feels like to be a scientist that thrill of having succeeded in performing a lab right is Just a fantasy to them which rather than doing it themselves they watch others do in their science class on the projectors. Parent support is also necessary for these type of activities they are always worried about keeping their children safe and not exposing them to dangerous things but the truth of the situation is that the world is unpredictable and hat isnt necessarily good or bad but they also have to encourage students as well as teachers to be creative with their work. One of the rising problems the education system is facing today is the low standards set in math classes. Students have such a hard time in math today and rather than pushing themselves to try and work harder students take out the easy way and only fulfill the required math classes that they need to take some even avoid taking math classes if possible and pursue careers where they dont have to do any math at all I am not an expert but Just from personal experience I think math after pre-calculus ust becomes so abstract that I stopped seeing the real life applications of pre- used to love math when I was in elementary and middle school but that all changed once I took pre-calculus what once used to be my best friend was now my sworn enemy I would do anything to avoid doing math homework I understood the concepts that was never the problem but I always knew where it would end everyday me sitting in front of that same smart board everyday seeing the teacher solve problems and asking him every day where in real life I could apply it to use and the answer would always be the same Oh you need this for higher level hysics or Oh you use this in engineering I had grown so bored of these redundant answers that I completely shut myself down in my math class. I knew the math I was learning in class was to be appreciated it was Just ingenious but I never understood its purpose in MY life so I never bothered with it. And I am sure that I am not the only one my friends would complain about the amount of math homework they had to do each day and how much they regretted having taken a math class that year but I think it can all be changed if the students were Just given something more tangible to nderstand not some strange concepts that brilliant mathematicians had worked their lives on using proofs and theorems that I cant even begin to pronounce. Another problem in todays education system is the need for results everyone wants higher test scores no matter what and scientific research has proven that tests dont necessarily show if you understand the concept or not its Just how good of a test taker you are. This is causing a lot of psychological issues in todays students they are all awfully stressed out right before a major exam or test and that stress later on leads to medical conditions. I think we need to rethink our approach to tests they dont fulfill their purpose yet they are valued so much. I think I might have a simple solution for that problem rather than wasting money on standardized tests schools across the nations should have and end of the year project varying from subject to subject which would actually show how much of the material that they have actually learned and how much of it have they retained. Tests today are Just unfair to most of the kids they are not only timed they are State Standardized so whatever material that your teachers didnt go over is also put in the test it can result in loss of onfidence early on in the test totally ruining the students test scores. Last but not least the final problem I want to address in this essay is the motivation that the students lack which can either be the result of teaching material or teaching method either way resulting in a loss of years and years of education. Students all around the world already know what they want to become the second they leave high school they have been exposed to all the subjects enough but in U. S we barely scrape the top of the iceberg over 80% of college bound students go undecided into college t isnt necessarily bad but they waste years doing something that though they liked in high school but end up changing their major I think students can reach their potential faster if the standards in high school are increased every year or so. The more the students are exposed to different kinds of learning materials the easier it is for them to find what they truly like once they leave high school. it is used that might make it look that way but if technology were to combine with education the results would open up unbelievable opportunities for teachers and students.

Is Police Brutality a Serious Problem in the US? Essay
Introduction In the article, ââ¬Å"Police Brutality is Over-Sensationalizedââ¬Å", Auerback made plenty of logical arguments about the issue of police brutality. But, the statistics he showed was from the city of Chicago. For example the Rodney King case was the first major case tried in court. The Rodney King case was about an African American being pulled over for no apparent reason. Eventually the officer was acquitted of all charges. Why do police officers just feel that they are above the law? Are they above the law? Despite Auerback showing many valid points throughout the article, his argument was very one sided or biased. Summary The article ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢the article police brutality is Over-Sensationalizedââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢, (Auerback, 2010) is about police brutality not being as big of a problem as the media makes it out to be. According to Auerback (2010) he claimsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ police brutality is not as commonplace as Americans claimââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. The author uses many statistics but they are only from the city of Chicago. But throughout the entire article he continuously was saying that police are put in challenging positions. 1st major point In the paragraph ââ¬Å"The Thin Lineââ¬Å", the author spoke about how excessive force by a police officer was a big problem. Auerback explained that police officers deal with dangerous situations through their regular day. Also, he described cases such as the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles being some of the reason police brutality was widespread. He said that the statistics he used couldnââ¬â¢t explicate a significant reason. In the paragraph ââ¬Å"The Evidence Suggests Otherwiseââ¬Å", Auerback clarified statistics showing thatà police brutality was not as bad as the media makes it out to be. For example, there was a study done by the Urbana ââ¬â Champaign independent Media Center on police brutality. The results showed that in Illinois 2854 police officers had complaints about police brutality, but surprisingly only 7 percent of the officers were regulated. Later on in the paragraph Auerback argued that police officers have the right to use excessive force to a certain extent. Basically in this paragraph the author is arguing that there isnââ¬â¢t enough evidence to prove police brutality isnââ¬â¢t a big deal. The paragraph ââ¬Å"having the Opposite Effectââ¬Å", Auerback explained how the media portrays the police sometimes makes the job harder, and hurts he communities. Throughout the paragraph he showed that police brutality was a very huge charge. Also the author showed that not all police officers are bad guys as the media portrays them. 2nd Major Point There were many logical arguments and valid questions to ask during the article ââ¬Å"Police Brutality is Over Sensationalizedââ¬Å". One logical argument about the article would be why were there only a few arguments? If the author would have made the article a two-way debate about police brutality. The article would be drastically changed. Auerback did explain police brutality could be a problem but, he explained police are always in the right basically. Another question I had that wasnââ¬â¢t answered was are all police officers bad? There are valid examples that some police officers take their authority too far. Such as the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles made police brutality come to the light. But, because of some police officers making bad decisions and using excessive force, they give police a bad name. Lastly, another argument would be that a police officers` is very dangerous, but are they above the law? Most police officers are some of the nicest people you will meet. They put their lives on the line to serve and protect us citizens. However when you look at the statistics shown in the article they show cops get away a lot of crimes. Such as in the article the statistics done in Chicago. Throughout five years Chicago saw 1774 complains per year with only 5% of the officer having the complaints. But, in the identical survey done only 1 percent had enough evidence to start a case. That is very disturbing to hear. Why do the police officers get away withà such crimes? The reason is there is just not much evidence to prove the point. The three logical points made by the article would be the police was above the law, and why do they have so much power. 3rd Major Point Auerbacks` angle of vision was very demanded by his background which gives him ethos or credibility but also shows he could be biased. His background gives him a lot of credibility. For example he had seventeen years of experience in public policy and political science. He graduated from Boston College Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, also working as a federal contractor. With all being said his perspective is biased by him working with the government. The governmentsââ¬â¢ perspective is that the government is always right. Which Auerbacksââ¬â¢ angle of vision is basically police are always in the right no matter what. If the author would have shown both sides of the issue of police brutality the article would be more credible. Also, the statistics shown in the article was only from the city of Chicago. If Auerback showed statistics of the entire country instead of using just a metropolitan city then the article wouldnââ¬â¢t be so biased. Auerbacks` angle of vision discredited the article. The author made it seem like officers always has a reason to use excessive force. Conclusion In conclusion, the article ââ¬Å"Police Brutality is Over Sensationalizedââ¬Å", spoke about how police officers use excessive force and how it was a huge problem. The author tried to downplay the issue by using examples of cases where the police officers was in the right. But, in reality there are plenty of examples of police officers using excessive force for no reason at all. His argument throughout the article was that the media over-exposes the issue. Auerback used only a certain amount of logical arguments. Despite Auerback showing many valid points throughout the article, his argument was very one-sided or biased. How to Easily Make Glow in the Dark Ice
Open up a bottle of tonic water, pour it into an ice cube tray, and stick it in the freezer. Tonic water glows vivid bright blue under a black light. The glow is activated by other sources of ultraviolet light, such as fluorescent lights or sunlight, though the glow wont appear as bright in part because the room wont be as dark. If you want to duplicate the effect in the photo, you need a black light somewhere in the room with the ice. Glowing Ice Flavor Tips Tonic water tastes vile, so heres a couple of tips for improving the flavor of the ice cubes. The first tip is to dilute the tonic water. If you mix the tonic water with normal water, your ice cubes will last longer (pure tonic water cubes melt fairly quickly) and wont taste as much like quinine (the ingredient responsible for the glow). Otherwise, you can cut it with lemonade or another sweet-sour drink that wont suffer from the bitter tang of the quinine. The second option is to put the ice into a drink where the flavor is desirable. The obvious choice would be to use the ice cubes in gin to make a gin and tonic. Non-alcoholic choices include fruit juice, Mountain Dewâ⠢, or Kool-Aidâ⠢. Dont worry about diminishing the glow from the ice. This photo is of tonic water ice and water. Types of Tonic Water The tonic water has to contain quinine. It doesnt make a difference whether you use diet or regular tonic water, be sure the label lists quinine. Some brands contain more flavoring than others, but I have had equally good luck with inexpensive store brands and premium brands. Another tip is to use clear plastic cups instead of glasses. Most plastic cups are brightly fluorescent under black light, so you get an added glow if you use them. You might want to take a mini-black light with you when you go shopping, to see what else will glow for you. You can make the ice into a glowing crystal ball to decorate punch bowls or look cool.

Teaching Reading Comprehension - 6449 Words
Introduction What is reading? Reading is about understanding written texts. It is a complex activity that involves both perception and thought. Reading consists of two related processes: word recognition and comprehension. Word recognition refers to the process of perceiving how written symbols correspond to oneââ¬â¢s spoken language. Comprehension is the process of making sense of words, sentences and connected text. Readers typically make use of background knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, experience with text and other strategies to help them understand written text. A person reading poetry for enjoyment needs to recognize the words the poet uses and the ways they are put together, but does not need to identify main idea and supporting details. However, a person using a scientific article to support an opinion needs to know the vocabulary that is used, understand the facts and cause-effect sequences that are presented, and recognize ideas that are presented as hypotheses and givens. The W. P. Swanson Confectionery Era Essay - 2149 Words
The W. P. Swanson Confectionery Era An unfortunate incident occurred toward the conclusion of the 1920s, when robbers broke into Bill, Clara, and Antonââ¬â¢s garage and stole their brand-new Buick automobile. While Clara lay in bed on the eventful night, she heard noise outside. Fearful of the consequences of a confrontation with the intruders, to safeguard Bill she refrained from waking him. Blissfully unaware of the burglars, Bill slept through the night and didnââ¬â¢t discover the theft until morning.26 An investigation revealed that after breaking into the garage, the thieves pushed the car out of the garage, the full length of the driveway onto the street, and down the street away from the scene of the crime, before starting the Buick and driving it away. The authorities never recovered the automobile.27 In 1929, Clara became pregnant at the age of thirty-five, regarded as too advanced in years to begin a family. An unexpected child this late in life, of course, created elation for the blessed arrival. However, in addition to Claraââ¬â¢s age, her family and personal history also caused grave concerns for the safety of both mother and baby. The death of Claraââ¬â¢s mother from frail health attributed to childbirth and the death of Claraââ¬â¢s only sibling, a brother, during his first year of life weighed heavily on Bill, Clara, and Anton.28 Furthermore, a miscarriage early in their marriage, while still farming in Peaceful Valley, exacerbated the concern.29 In an era whenShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of The Book The Round Oak Essay1576 Words à |à 7 PagesItems for sale at the confectionery, in addition to those listed in the centennial narrative, included over-the-counter medical and veterinary supplies, toiletries, greeting cards, knick-knacks, and holiday specific nove lties. Marketing and Management Multinational Coffeehouse Chain
Question: Describe about the Marketing and Management for Multinational Coffeehouse Chain. Answer: Introduction Starbucks is an American multinational coffeehouse chain, which was founded on 1971 in Seattle, Washington and stretched its operations in more than 23,768 locations globally. It is a publicly traded organization headquartered from Seattle, Washington to operate efficiency in the international business environment through its numerous subsidiaries that include Ethos Water, Tazo, and Hear Music. Coffee and beverage items are the main products of Starbucks while the product portfolio also includes baked foods, sandwiches, teas, and smoothies (Chua Banerjee, 2013). Considering such information, the product mix strategy of Starbucks principally specializes in coffee and related beverages, but in addition, company provides increasing attention to some different range of products as well. From the study of Hill, Jones, and Schilling (2014), the business expansion of Starbucks depends on other categories of products like Tazo tea and Espresso apart from coffee and beverage products. Taking such identifications into the account, this report is based on analysing the international and external environment of the chosen company to explore the whole situation surrounding the business. Situation Analysis External Analysis Industry analysis In order to analyse the industry, in which Starbucks operates, the five forces analysis indicated by Porter is applied and the implications are demonstrated in the following section: Competitive Rivalry (Strong) The competitive rivalry is high in the coffee shop industry due to the fundamental influence of the competitors on each other. Large number of firms from the competitive environment. Low brand switching cost among the customers within the industry A large variety of firms also provide influence to the rising level of competitive rivalry to a certain extent. Bargaining Power of Buyers (Strong) Individual group of customers from the identified industry have their strong bargaining power over the operating companies. Customers enjoy a low switching cost to swap from one brand to another brand. A large number of substitutes are available in the chosen market causing a high threat for the organizations. Relatively a small number of individual buyers associated with the industry are also denoted as the factor having limited influence in the particular context. Bargaining Power of Suppliers (Weak) Suppliers have their highly limited influence over the identified industry thereby causing weak bargaining power. A high variety of suppliers exist in the chosen market causing them to have limited influence or control over the sector. Great sources of supplies are also available for the participatory companies The individual size of each suppliers is noted to be moderate within the industry Threat of Substitutes (Strong) Due to the large variety of substitute goods, the coffee shop industry experiences a strong threat from the substitutions. Low switching cost and offering alternative products in the low and competitive price ranges by the substitutes contribute to the strong level of threats for the associated companies. Threat of New Entrants (Moderate) The impact of new players or entrants within the specific market is considered to be moderate due to a number of factors. The cost for developing a venture within the industry is termed as moderate Cost associated with the supply chain of a business is also categorised to be moderate Business needs to incur high amount of cost for developing its business and improving the brand name Table 1: Porters Five Force Analysis regarding the Global Coffee Shop Industry (Source: Ebert Griffin, 2015) Market analysis The overall commodity chain of coffee can be adeptly categorised in different small divisions, such as producers, agents, exporters, importers, roasters, retailers, and consumers (Wu, 2013). These particular areas are fundamentally catalogued in three primary segments known as growers, roasters, and retailers. Payne and Frow (2013) have argued that the appropriate distinction between the interactions of various players associated with each segment of the market should need to be necessarily investigated for understanding the underlying economic structure of the coffee shop industry. The result of the study developed by Chernev (2014) indicates price elasticity of demand as one of the significant factors influencing the global coffee industry due to the consistently increasing demand in the international environment. The chosen factor helps to determine the roles of the consumers in the particular industry, as the buying behaviours of the consumers are extensively influenced. Apart from that, being coffee classified in the luxury category of goods, different economic situations and criteria deeply affect or hamper the growth of the global coffee market (Kotler, et al., 2015). For example, economic crisis of 2008 had greatly diminished the rate of coffee consumption to affect the entire marketplace. Competitor analysis With reference to the suggestion provided by Ling (2014), it can be stated that the speciality coffee industry has travelled a long way since 1987 regarding both the variety of products and competitive rivalry. With the help of the study, it is also acknowledged that the global progress and industrial development has inflicted Starbucks to compete against multiple organizations of different sizes and exposures unlike the early days of its operation when it used to compete with against the small-scale and local specialised coffee retailers. Considering the contemporary market environment, all the primary competitors of Starbucks are serving speciality food and beverage products, which are different from the product rages of the company in different ways (Jacobs Chase, 2013). As a result, the firm faces strong level of competitive pressure from the rival players. Caribou Coffee, which is a Minneapolis-based coffee shop classified as one of the main regional competitor of Starbucks with its similar set of approaches to create an exceptional brand presence (Liebowitz, 2013). In addition, Wilson and Gilligan (2012) indicate McDonalds as one of the primary competitors of Starbucks from the global environment due to the offering of coffee drink named as McCafe. The other categories of foods like Frappuccino also provide a significant level of competitive threats to Starbucks. Customer analysis Based on the concept obtained from the work of Pealoza, Toulouse, and Visconti (2013), no factors can beat the fragrant smell of roasted coffee irrespective of the locations of consumption. The same study also signifies that the population from the global environment are typically driven by the tastes of specialised coffees to spend increasing money annually. Based on the large variety of global customers, consumers can be segregated in four distinct categories, namely drip coffee drinkers, coffee shop lovers, speciality coffee drinkers, and whole bean buyers (Kotler, et al., 2015). The drip coffee drinkers are the consumers of coffee products on a daily basis, where they are basically students or business workers. Alternatively, coffee shop lovers are the individuals who like to spend time as the cafes or hubs with the interest on consuming speciality and regular cups of coffee. The certain customers fundamentally belong to the age group of 18 24 years. On the other hand, Qian and Xing (2016) point out speciality coffee drinkers tend to consume special cups of coffees like espressos, cappuccinos, mochas, and lattes. The study also suggests that whole bean buyers are also found in the coffee market, as these customers want to make coffee at their homes or offices. Starbucks mainly prioritises the drip coffee drinkers and coffee shop lovers throughout the global environment to expand its business (Lim, Chae Jeon, 2014). Macro Environment Environment Key Environmental Trends identified for Starbucks Political/Legal The western politicians as well as the sourcing country provide an increasing level of attention to sourcing of raw materials (Kreutzer Land, 2015). Regulatory rules and regulations like taxation policies and employment legislations of individual countries are another important political factor. Economic One of the primary economic drivers of Starbucks is the global economic recession hampering the buying behaviour of the customers. Additionally, exchange rate of local currencies, local economic environment, and taxation system of various countries influence Starbucks dramatically (Qian Xing, 2016). Socio-cultural Starbucks is forced to offer quality products according to the socio-cultural trends of different countries at the affordable or cheaper price ranges (Wilson Gilligan, 2012). Additionally, the changing family patterns of USA and Europe and customer perceptions and lifestyles have their pivotal influences over the strategy of the organization. Technological The emerging mobile wave technology is adequately introduced by Starbucks due to the collaboration with Apple (Pealoza, Toulouse Visconti, 2013). In addition, the emerging progress of biotechnology and agriculture provide advantage to the growth of the firm. Table 2: Macro environmental analysis of Starbucks (Source: Wilson Gilligan, 2012) Internal Analysis Operational analysis With the help of 4-P framework, the key operations of Starbucks can be demonstrated: Product Starbucks uses to capture market with the help of innovative product mix, which includes some of the primary category of products: Coffee Tea Pastries Smoothies Frappuccino Place Starbucks typically offers its large variety of products through multiple cafes, as the marketing mix determines the venue of offering certain products primarily include: Cafes Online Stores Retailers Starbucks App Price Advertising is the primary tool for promoting the products of Starbucks. Apart from that, promotional mix includes: Sales promotions Public relations Promotion Starbucks uses premium pricing strategy to offer its products. Pricing strategy tends to take advantage of the behavioural approaches of the customers regarding their tendency to purchase expensive products. Table 3: 4P Analysis of Starbucks (Source: Chernev, 2014) Financial analysis The key financial areas associated with the operations of Starbucks can be highlighted through the use of a table: Particulars FY 2014 FY 2015 Revenue 16448 19163 Cost of Revenue 6859 7788 Operating Income 3081 3601 Return on Invested Capital 30.79% 35.86% Total Cash Position 1708 1503 Table 4: Key Financial Areas associated with the Operations of Starbucks; figures in million USD (Source: Ling, 2014) It can be observed that Starbuck has demonstrated a better financial performance in the financial year ending 2015 than 2014. The same fact can be judged by looking at the increasing revenues, operating income, and return on investment. However, the company needs to leverage more focus on its business proceedings for enhancing the liquidity position of the business. Product analysis As dictated earlier, premium products are offered by Starbucks with the aim of approaching and attracting the premium segment of the market (Hill, Jones Schilling, 2014). As part of the process, they tend to position themselves in the market by continuously leveraging on innovation and delivering high quality products. Relating to the scenario, Lim, Chae, Jeon (2014), Starbucks has strategically expanded its product categories for maintaining the existing momentum satisfaction level of the customers. For example, Tazo Tea, developed by the company through integrating innovative models, is dedicated to the tea lovers of India. Additionally, the existing products offered by Starbucks include Frappuccino, strawberry cream, and different lattes (Payne Frow 2013). Moreover, the company needs to use extensive innovation for developing its future range of products according to the rapidly changing tastes of global consumers.
